Everyone knows, reading is good for you. It relaxes and strengthens your mind. But the big question is: How do you get the habit of reading to stick?
Make sure you like the book.
If you aren’t enjoying the book, you won’t want to make time to read it. Simple as that. So get rid of that dusty old classic you hate and have been trying to finish for years and go find something that actually interests you.
Get into a reading routine.
When will you read? How long will you read for? Many people decide to read just before they go to sleep, but anytime is fine as long as you aren’t busy. Don’t try and make yourself read for hours if you don’t want to, this will only discourage you from reading again. Pick a set time to read and choose how long you will read for. If you are really enjoying your book, you can read for longer, but if you are only starting out 10-15 minutes is fine.
Have somewhere nice to read.
Whether you are snuggled under a blanket or on your favourite couch, being in a comfortable position can help you enjoy your time reading, and get you into the right mood. It can make you enjoy the experience more, and help make the habit stick.
Set the mood.
Whether you like to read in silence, or you like to have some music in the background, having a good atmosphere where you are reading can improve your focus, and therefore improve your enjoyment.
Don’t let yourself forget to read.
Leave your book/e-reader where you can see it, set a reminder on your phone, whatever you have to do to try and keep yourself reading, just as long as your still enjoying it!
