Finding your favourite reading genre.

Finding your favourite reading genre.

Finding your favourite reading genre(s) means knowing what category the books you enjoy or fit into.

Many people believe that they don't enjoy reading.

At the Book Corner, we believe that this is not true. We believe that the reason people carry this negative and untrue belief is because they have not yet found the genre or style of writing they enjoy.

For example, if you are someone who thinks happy endings are the worst (we relate), reading a fairy tale where the prince rescues the princess and they live happily ever after is not fun.

That experience may lead you to believe that you don't like reading, but, if you had tried another genre/book, you may have loved it and realised that you do actually enjoy reading.

Having a genre of book that you enjoy can really help you when you are looking for new books.

It means you know what kind of books you enjoy, and are not just randomly picking any old book.

With that in mind, we decided to compile a list of different genres for you to look at.

We have placed them under two headings: fictitious and factual.

Fictitious (Fiction)

Ah, fiction. One of the most popular and diverse genres of books.

Fiction covers a wide range of smaller genres, from historical fiction to the fairytale fiction that we discussed above.

Although all of the genres covered by the name fiction are different, there is one thing that they all have in common, and that is that they are all  figments of the author’s imagination.

Here is a list of the most popular types of fiction and the kind of topics that they cover.

Thrillers

Fans of Goosebumps will remember the REAL Beast from the East

This genre covers horror books, ghost stories and any other book that fills you with anticipation for what is going to happen next.

Many books in this genre are cliffhangers.

Action

19 must-read books for 9-12-year-olds | Children's fictional stories

This genre includes superhero books, crime-fighting books, spy books, adventure books, and any other book that has people going to the rescue or running from a villain.

This genre also covers most superhero comics.

Historical fiction

The Runaway Children by Sandy Taylor

Historical fiction is written fictitiously, but is based on real people or events from history.

Historical fiction is a lot more interesting than you might think - it can put a very interesting spin on events or people.

It can also make history more real by putting faces, personalities and stories behind names.

Fantasy

25 Of The Top Fantasy Books On Goodreads | Book Riot

Fantasy tends to contain the most fictitious of fiction. This is where books focused on dragons, witches, wizards and other magical people or creatures belong.

This is also the genre that covers many fairy tales.

Factual (facts)

Factual books are written about, you guessed it, facts or events. Factual writing also covers a large range of sub-genres.

Here is our list of the main factual sub-genres.

Biographies/Autobiographies

Amazon.com: Biography Of Famous People: Alexander Hamilton eBook ...

A biography is a book about another person.

An autobiography is a book about you, written by you. Many people writing autobiographies also enlist help from a professional writer.

Both are often extremely inspirational. You also get to learn the story of a famous person or someone who lived through something horrific/wonderful (autobiographies and biographies often fit into one or both of those categories), and learn about their outlook on life.

Historical account

Horrible Histories Pack (Classic Editions) x 18 - Scholastic Shop

Historical accounts are either written at the time (a primary source), or after the time (a secondary source) about the events that happened.

They can be fun and interesting to read, especially if you are interested in the era(s) they discuss.

Travel

Dubray Books. The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in ...

Travel books are about somewhere (or a group of places) that someone has visited.

They can provide an insight into what the scenery; locals and amenities are like, and whether a place is worth visiting.

They can also be fun and interesting to read, even if you have no plans to go to the place(s) that are talked about in a travel book.

Cookbook

The Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Cookbook: Recipes and ...

Cookbooks are filled with recipes for delicious food that the author has learned to make.

They can provide you with lots of ideas for things to try and cook or bake.

They can be enjoyable to browse through if you enjoy dealing with food.

We hope that reading about the various genres of reading and that this blog post has helped you find the genre that you want to try and read more books in. Remember, there are more genres than listed above, and many books fit into more than one category.

If you think that you may enjoy reading in more than one genre, then feel free to give them both a go. Remember, you can always try a different genre if you don’t enjoy the one you originally picked.

Try to experiment with different genres to discover which ones suit you the best.

What’s your favourite genre? Have we forgotten it ? Tell us in the comments below!

Welcome

Hi! Welcome to the Book Corner Blog. This is a blog all about children’s books. As children ourselves we are experts on the subject and we want to share our knowledge with all of you. We know that many children associate reading with school. We hope that this can change since there are so many books out there that are nothing to do with school but still very, very good. On our blog we hope to introduce children and young adults to books that they will want to read instead of ones they think they should read. We are also hoping to include some author interviews. We have so many questions to ask the authors of our favorite books. There are some books that you read and they just fill you up with questions. We want to get answers to those questions. We hope that our blog will cover those topics as well as many more. We will try to post at least once a week and we would be overjoyed if you were to read some of them.  Saoirse and Neassa at The Book Corner

Why you don’t like reading

Why you don’t like reading In this blogpost we are going to talk about a lot of common reasons why people don’t like reading and how to get around these problems. We know that there are so many different reasons that people don’t like reading and we are only going to cover the basic ones. Teachers Teachers are actually a huge problem when it comes to children reading. They often make their classes read books that they don’t want to read as part of their work. These books are usually classics or books that are quite complicated and very “wordy” [meaning that they have a lot of words and phrases that are uncommon or rarely used]. Not all teachers are like this, though. When I [Saoirse] was in sixth class [fifth grade] I read “Holes” by Louis Sachar. This turned out to be one of my favourite books so that ended up being a good thing. Another problem with teachers is that they rarely have very good or interesting books in their class library. For us, this is a big problem becaus

Reading by Neassa

Hey guys, it's Neassa. I don't really have a specific topic for this post, so I'm just gonna talk all things reading. Why am I doing this, you might ask? Well, it's because reading books isn't confined to one subject, so neither is this post. I am often asked, why reading? Why are you a bookworm when you could be a gamer or a sportswoman? Well, firstly I can still be a gamer or a sportswoman and still be a bookworm ! It's not a job or a commitment, it's just for fun.  And why reading? If I'm completely honest, I'm not sure. I really can't remember a time when I wasn't surrounded with books whether I was reading them myself or having them read to me by m parents, so I have been enjoying stories for years ,and I just never stopped! I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I also like writing short stories. I would love to write a novel, and am really excited about that. I like writing because I like to try and cover topics I lik
