Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

 DIVERGENT BY VERONICA ROTH

BLURB

“Three flying birds… one for each member of the family I left behind”

Sixteen-year-old Tris is forced to make a terrible choice. In a divided society where everyone must conform, Tris does not fit.

So she ventures out alone, determined to discover where she truly belongs. Shocked by her brutal new life, Tris can trust no one. And yet she is drawn to a boy who seems to both threaten and protect her.

The hardest choice lies ahead.

MY THOUGHTS

I have scrapped my usual bullet points at the beginning because, honestly, I forgot. I usually take some notes while reading, which become my points at the start. But this time I was too caught up in the book to think about things like that, even though this is my third time reading it. It is really that good.

I remember exactly how I heard about this book. My friend was reading it in school, pretty much non-stop. During it she raved about it to everyone - even our English teacher. What really struck me , however, was that as soon as she finished it, she read the whole thing a second time. Straight away.

So, of course, I just had to read it. I actually forget where I got it, but as soon as I saw it I immediately bought it.

And I was not disappointed. I love, love, love this book (if you somehow hadn’t noticed). It is near-perfect. I love the characters, the plot, the writing, everything. I was mind blown the first time. It’s just so good.

“I am selfish. I am brave.”

I don’t want to spoil this for anyone, as I 100% would recommend reading it, so I won’t say much about what actually happens, just most of the reasons I like it (not all, we don’t have all day) .

Reason numero uno: the writing. Ah, the writing. I really felt I was there. I felt what Tris felt (mostly), smiled when she laughed, hurt for her when she cried and just connected with her. This is what made it so great to reread, I was constantly like “oh, I love this bit!” or “so we were given some warning of (insert plot twist)”.

I also really liked the characters. They were so real. There were no ‘good’ people, all of them had scars. This just added to the novel for me - no one wants unrealistic characters with completely rational minds and logical decisions. That would be boring.

“And I am someone who does not let inconsequential things like boys and near-death experiences stop her.”

This book also really helped me in real life. The quote “I don’t think. I just bend my knees and jump” has helped me a good few times when I was facing something that scared me. Tris is a brilliant character - she’s neither especially strong or weak, but she can summon strength when she needs to. This is very inspiring and helpful for me, and it gives me courage as well.

Well, that’s all I can really say without giving events away. But seriously, I would recommend each and every one of you give it a read - it’s brilliant

The Future by Neassa

Hi guys, I know Saoirse wrote a post about her future with the business, what we see happening in the future and where we want this to go. Although I love the sound of here future, I have my own path ahead of me, and it's a bit different. If you haven't read Saoirse's plans, they are: Writing blog posts and maintaining website (year-round, but specifically during COVID and winter) Car boots sales on Saturdays/Sundays during the year and a pop-up stall in summer. (After COVID and while I’m still in school) Pop-up stall as a part-time job (while in college) Actual shop (after graduating) As Saoirse mentioned in her post, right now we are living the dream. Just two normal sisters doing what they love to do. How could that be a bad thing? I am happy and content with we are doing right now, but don't feel as though that will always be the case. I, of course, want to stay a part of this business for as long as I possibly can, but I also have always wanted to be a teacher. I

Reading Consistently: A Quick Guide

Well hello there :), We are gathered today to discuss something that is an amalgamation (spell check? absolutely) of two topics I find quite interesting: reading (obviously) and habit-building. Yes, yes I am a nerd. I have decided to embrace this fact today. I just find it so intriguing how some people have certain habits while some don’t. Of course, many habits are built when someone is a young child, but I think everyone has the power to build new, or change old, habits given the correct tools. So, today I am going to talk about building a reading habit. This is, in my opinion, one of the best habits you can have. It has many benefits, which I’ll do another post on, but briefly some are: increased empathy and vocabulary, better quality sleep and less stress. Just before jumping in, I want to just say: I am no expert. BUT I think I can provide valid advice on building reading habits, as I have a healthy reading habit, experience building my own habits and I have (nerdily) watched coun

Reading indoors vs. Reading outdoors

Hi all, it’s Neassa and today I’m going to be listing the pros and cons of reading indoors versus reading outdoors, to find out which one reigns supreme! Just to begin, I would like to point out that I enjoy reading indoors and outdoors, so I am curious to see which one will win the battle of the reading spot. Reading indoors: Pros You are always warm and dry When you are reading indoors, the temperature doesn’t change along with the time, so i can begin to read when it was sunny and read straight through a thunderstorm without even noticing. The room will stay heated, I’ll stay cosy (and oblivious at times!) and everything is just right. You have the comfy chairs. I don’t know about you guys, but we have the most comfortable chairs inside. There are a few garden chairs outside, but they are not as comfortable as the big, cushioned chair where I love to curl up with a good book! You can play music When I am reading, I love to play soft, relaxing music that is said to improve concentr
