Review: Playing for Pizza by John Grisham

PLAYING FOR PIZZA BY JOHN GRISHAM

BLURB

Rick Dockery was the third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. In the deciding game at the climax of the season, to the surprise and dismay of virtually everyone, Rick actually got into the game. With a 17-point lead and just minutes to go, Rick provided what was arguably the worst single performance in the history of the NFL. Overnight, he became a national laughing stock and, of course, was dropped by the Browns and shunned by all other teams.

But all Rick knows is football, and he insists that his agent, Arnie, finds a team that needs him. Against enormous odds, Arnie finally finds him a team and informs Rick that, miraculously, he can in fact now be a starting quarterback. Great, says Rick - for which team?

The mighty Parma Panthers of Parma, Italy

Yes, Italians do play American football, to one degree or another, and the Parma Panthers desperately want a player from the home of American football at their helm. So Rick reluctantly agrees to play for the Panthers - at least until a better offer comes along - and heads off to Italy. He knows nothing about Parma (not even where it is), has never been to Europe, and doesn't speak or understand a word of Italian.

To say that Italy - the land of opera, fine wines, extremely small cars, romance and football americano - hold a few surprises for Rick Dockery would be something of an understatement.

MY THOUGHTS

  • Not much happened

  • Learned a lot about Italy, especially its people

  • American football lingo left me floundering

  • Expected, but satisfying, ending.

When my mam gave me this book, I was intrigued. An adult book? By the number one bestselling author (is it just me, or do they all say that?) John Grisham? With a big picture of him on the back? I was in for a wild ride.

Except I wasn’t. Nothing happened. It was the story of what happened to Rick in Italy, but there were no twists, no turns, nothing exciting

Don’t get me wrong, it was a good read, but nothing special. I was a bit let down, because John Grisham is a popular author and my mam likes him.

I enjoyed the Italian characters. I loved their feistiness, their passion. This book made me want to visit Italy, just not with Rick Dockery.

I found him boring and kind of shallow. He didn’t have anything to him, he was just an American football player. I found that annoying, especially since he was the main character. I was looking for something interesting, some personality, but found little.

It was strange - I found the writing style pretty good, and liked the secondary characters, but Rick himself was a major let-down.

This next one is just me but I was kind of lost when they were actually on the playing field. I know less about American football than Rick knew about Parma. This took away from the book for me, because I had no idea what was going on.

It had quite the happy ending, which was nice, if not a little boring. I was satisfied, but not fulfilled with it. There’s not much I can say about it that doesn’t ruin it but it was expected. I’ll leave it at that.

All in all, even though I’ve kind of bashed for the past few paragraphs, I wouldn’t say you shouldn’t read it, but don’t put it at the top of your ‘to-read’ pile. Maybe use it as a break if you’ve been reading overly depressing books for a while.

Welcome

Hi! Welcome to the Book Corner Blog. This is a blog all about children’s books. As children ourselves we are experts on the subject and we want to share our knowledge with all of you. We know that many children associate reading with school. We hope that this can change since there are so many books out there that are nothing to do with school but still very, very good. On our blog we hope to introduce children and young adults to books that they will want to read instead of ones they think they should read. We are also hoping to include some author interviews. We have so many questions to ask the authors of our favorite books. There are some books that you read and they just fill you up with questions. We want to get answers to those questions. We hope that our blog will cover those topics as well as many more. We will try to post at least once a week and we would be overjoyed if you were to read some of them.  Saoirse and Neassa at The Book Corner

Why you don’t like reading

Why you don’t like reading In this blogpost we are going to talk about a lot of common reasons why people don’t like reading and how to get around these problems. We know that there are so many different reasons that people don’t like reading and we are only going to cover the basic ones. Teachers Teachers are actually a huge problem when it comes to children reading. They often make their classes read books that they don’t want to read as part of their work. These books are usually classics or books that are quite complicated and very “wordy” [meaning that they have a lot of words and phrases that are uncommon or rarely used]. Not all teachers are like this, though. When I [Saoirse] was in sixth class [fifth grade] I read “Holes” by Louis Sachar. This turned out to be one of my favourite books so that ended up being a good thing. Another problem with teachers is that they rarely have very good or interesting books in their class library. For us, this is a big problem becaus

Reading by Neassa

Hey guys, it's Neassa. I don't really have a specific topic for this post, so I'm just gonna talk all things reading. Why am I doing this, you might ask? Well, it's because reading books isn't confined to one subject, so neither is this post. I am often asked, why reading? Why are you a bookworm when you could be a gamer or a sportswoman? Well, firstly I can still be a gamer or a sportswoman and still be a bookworm ! It's not a job or a commitment, it's just for fun.  And why reading? If I'm completely honest, I'm not sure. I really can't remember a time when I wasn't surrounded with books whether I was reading them myself or having them read to me by m parents, so I have been enjoying stories for years ,and I just never stopped! I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I also like writing short stories. I would love to write a novel, and am really excited about that. I like writing because I like to try and cover topics I lik
