How I Choose My Books

 How I Choose My Books

Hi all, it’s Neassa and today I’m going to show you all how I choose my books. This post will be split into two sections, how I choose my books from bookshops and libraries and how I pick the book I will read next from my bookshelf.

How I choose books from bookshops and libraries

Step 1

Well, before I even go to the bookshop or the library I have a list of two or three books that I would like in my head, so that I have an idea of the books that I am looking for. I don’t always get these books, they are just a base so that I won’t leave with nothing.

Step 2

Once I get to the bookshop or library, I spend a few minutes browsing my favourite sections and either making a mental note of or picking up any books that interest me. I do this because it means that I have a selection of possible books. At this point I often pick up the books I had thought of before I arrived.

Step 3

When I have done that, I take a look at the books I have selected. I take a few minutes to decide which ones I will most likely enjoy, and which ones that might not be my type. Sometimes, I even pick all of them! It really doesn’t matter how many you choose, just don’t leave with nothing!

Quick library tip: If you are in the library, I would always recommend you get a wild card book. A wild card book is a book that you really don’t know a lot about, and borrow it. It might be so bad, but it just might be wonderful!

Step 4

The last thing to do is actually getting the books. This step is the easiest and, surprise surprise, the most common. I barely need to add it to this post at all! You just bring the booksto the counter and buy or borrow them. We often get looks of surprise from the shop keepers at how many books we are getting, especially when we are getting books for The Book Corner!

How I choose books off my bookshelf

I almost always have three or four books sitting on my bookshelf that I am planning to read, but just haven’t got around to it just yet. Maybe I will get another load of books, maybe I’ll see some interesting books on Saoirse’s shelf or maybe I’ll just go off reading for a little bit, but I always have these books as a base.

I also have books that I just can’t wait to read on my bookshelf. These, obviously, get priority over my base books. Here’s how I sort them and how I choose the next book I read.

Step 1

When I am coming near to finishing a book, I will take a look at my shelf and take out all of the books that I haven’t read yet. Sometimes I have ten books, sometimes I have two,but I do it either way. I lie them all out on my desk so that I can see the blurb of each of them.

Step 2

I decide the number of books that I want to have scheduled for me, it is normally 3, and write the numbers on some sticky notes. Then, I decide which books I want to read and stick the sticky notes on to the books. So, say I wanted to read Mortal Engines followed by Skulduggery Pleasant,  then I would stick a sticky note with the number one on Mortal Engines and a sticky note on Skulduggery Pleasant with the number two on it.

Then, the next time I am looking for a book, I just pick up the book with the number one sticker on it, Mortal Engines, and read that! It saves me a lot of reading time, which is such a good thing!

Happy Reading

Welcome

Hi! Welcome to the Book Corner Blog. This is a blog all about children’s books. As children ourselves we are experts on the subject and we want to share our knowledge with all of you. We know that many children associate reading with school. We hope that this can change since there are so many books out there that are nothing to do with school but still very, very good. On our blog we hope to introduce children and young adults to books that they will want to read instead of ones they think they should read. We are also hoping to include some author interviews. We have so many questions to ask the authors of our favorite books. There are some books that you read and they just fill you up with questions. We want to get answers to those questions. We hope that our blog will cover those topics as well as many more. We will try to post at least once a week and we would be overjoyed if you were to read some of them.  Saoirse and Neassa at The Book Co...

Why you don’t like reading

Why you don’t like reading In this blogpost we are going to talk about a lot of common reasons why people don’t like reading and how to get around these problems. We know that there are so many different reasons that people don’t like reading and we are only going to cover the basic ones. Teachers Teachers are actually a huge problem when it comes to children reading. They often make their classes read books that they don’t want to read as part of their work. These books are usually classics or books that are quite complicated and very “wordy” [meaning that they have a lot of words and phrases that are uncommon or rarely used]. Not all teachers are like this, though. When I [Saoirse] was in sixth class [fifth grade] I read “Holes” by Louis Sachar. This turned out to be one of my favourite books so that ended up being a good thing. Another problem with teachers is that they rarely have very good or interesting books in their cl...

Reading by Neassa

Hey guys, it's Neassa. I don't really have a specific topic for this post, so I'm just gonna talk all things reading. Why am I doing this, you might ask? Well, it's because reading books isn't confined to one subject, so neither is this post. I am often asked, why reading? Why are you a bookworm when you could be a gamer or a sportswoman? Well, firstly I can still be a gamer or a sportswoman and still be a bookworm ! It's not a job or a commitment, it's just for fun.  And why reading? If I'm completely honest, I'm not sure. I really can't remember a time when I wasn't surrounded with books whether I was reading them myself or having them read to me by m parents, so I have been enjoying stories for years ,and I just never stopped! I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I also like writing short stories. I would love to write a novel, and am really excited about that. I like writing because I like to try and cover topics I lik...
