The Supernaturalists - Review
Hi all, it’s Neassa and today I’m going to be reviewing The Supernaturalists by Eoin Colfer. I started this book about a month a go, and since then have read multiple books alongside this one.
What is this book about?
This book is about a boy called Cosmo Hill who lives in an orphanage called “Clarissa Frayne’s institute for the parentally challenged” and hates it. For many years, he had dreamt about escaping, but never thought it would actually happen. That was until that day.
When Cosmo sees his chance at escape, he immediately seized it. But he has never really been out of the orphanage before, and it’s only a matter of time before the orphanage realizes he is missing and comes looking for him.
Thoughts?
If I’m being honest, I started this book not knowing anything about it, but giving it a go anyway because it was by Eoin Colfer, an author whose books I had read before and whose writing genres and age groups I had figured out. Or so I thought, anyway.
This book has completely broken that mold. Had I not known who wrote the book before I began reading it, I would have guessed the likes of William Alexander, the author of Goblin Secrets, or the kind of book that would come of Lemony Snicket, author of a series of Unfortunate Events, and Derek Landy, author of Skulduggery, teaming up. Certainly not an Eoin Colfer.
All of the other EoinColfer booksI i've read have been interesting, but very mild and written in such a way that you can read his books to 8 or 9 year olds without scaring them and, while there is nothing wrong with this, it’s a bit boring.
This book, on the other hand, was full of action and excitement. He wrote it for an older audience,12 + I’d say, and made it scary and a little sad. He gave the characters more aggression, if something went wrong they weren’t happy.
Comparing this book and Artemis Fowl, one of his most popular books, would be like comparing a younger brother to his older sister. Although they, naturally, will have some similarities, they are, in many ways, very different.
Genre(s)?
This book is an fantasy, action and adventure book
Fantasy because many mythical creatures and monsters slide in throughout the book.
Action because it includes a lot of fighting scenes.
Adventure because of the crazy things The Supernaturalists get up to
I really hope you guys will consider reading this book, if you're 12 or over!
Happy Reading
